ATMOS - LET`S SAVE THE PLANET!

ATMOS - LET`S SAVE THE PLANET!
Our superhero for this meeting was Atmos who helped consolidate the participants’ understanding of the causes of the Greenhouse Effect to develop responses to the problems the planet faces. Partner schools had their own curriculum activities addressing these issues. Additionally three science activities were devised which showed how greenhouse gases are necessary to warm the planet but too much can harm the environment, how human activity is producing too much CO2, and how we can minimise the pollution we create. The investigations were a range of practical and fun activities, to further explore atmospheric pollution. During the meeting pupils presented their learning about the Greenhouse Effect and its effects on the environment. They explained their outcomes and conclusions and answered questions from the other participants.
As well as school-based activities there were visits focussed on Serbia’s industrial history. The Prince’s Arsenal and the Old Foundry Museum in Kragujevac told the story of the city’s early industrialisation. The country’s first light bulb was switched on at the arsenal, as was its first electric operated machine. In Belgrade the pupils visited the Tesla Museum and took part in demonstrations of Tesla’s inventions and heard about his failed attempt to create free power for the world.
The Jevremovac Botanical Gardens in Belgrade and the Natural History Centre of Serbia in Svilajnac were great opportunities for the pupils who studied the diversity of flora and fauna of Serbia and its geological history. Pupils learnt about the culture and history of Serbia on visits to Kalemegdan fortress in Belgrade, the Historical Archive of Šumadija, the Manasija Monastery , National Museum in Kragujevac, the first secondary school in Kragujevac - Memorial Classroom , Science Garden, and the Memorial Park Šumarice.
In each module, the pupils have met one of our Superheroes. They have studied their powers and how they are working to prevent aspects of climate change. All their understanding of the causes and effects of Climate Change were brought together in a comic book produced by the pupils. Everyone had worked on a beginning involving the superhero from their own project meeting. In workshops the pupils completed the comic books showing how the heroes needed each other to defeat climate change. Together our Superheroes are The Earth Force Five and through them the children learned how they can work together to change the future of our world. The comic book workshops brought together all the learning from the earlier meetings as well as this final one. Each group discussed their ideas with the others and a list of actions to prevent Climate Change was prepared. Workshops looked back at the work of the project and how it will continue. As the final meeting we had a presentation event for members of the local community as well as participants. The hosts prepared a performance, and the superheroes took part in their costumes. It was both a celebration of the project’s achievements so far and of the ongoing work still to be done back in our own communities.
